Perplexity Visibility Tracker: How to Track Your Website’s AI Search Presence

In this article

Quick answer: A Perplexity visibility tracker shows whether Perplexity names your brand, cites your website, or sends you visitors. You can do it for free. Pick 12 questions your customers ask. Run them in Perplexity every two weeks. Write down three things each time: was your brand mentioned, was your website cited, and who else was cited.

Ranking on Google does not mean Perplexity will name you. A page can be on page one and still be missing from a Perplexity answer. A directory, a Reddit thread or a competitor may get the citation instead.

Key takeaways

  • Track three things separately: mentions, citations and clicks.
  • Use the same prompts every time. Change nothing between rounds.
  • Sort every cited link by type. This shows who owns the sources in your niche.
  • Perplexity visibility is a sample, not a guarantee. No one can promise a citation.

About the examples: Cedar Row Bookkeeping is a made-up Denver bookkeeper. All numbers below are invented to show the maths. They are not real test results.

What is a Perplexity visibility tracker?

A Perplexity visibility tracker is a tool or a spreadsheet that runs the same questions in Perplexity again and again and records the answers. It tells you where your business shows up in AI answers and where it does not.

It measures six things:

MeasureWhat it tells you
Brand mention rateHow often your brand is named
Domain citation rateHow often any page from your site is cited
Target-page citation rateHow often one chosen page is cited
Competitor citation rateHow often a competitor is cited for the same questions
Prompt coverageHow many of your key questions show you at all
Referral visitsWhether people click through and take action

These are not official Perplexity numbers. They come from the questions you pick.

Mention, citation and click: what is the difference?

TermMeaningExample
MentionPerplexity names your brand in the answer“Cedar Row Bookkeeping is one option…”
CitationYour website is listed as a numbered sourceYour URL is in the source list
ClickA person visits your site from the answerA Perplexity session in analytics

You can get one without the others. A mention with no link often means Perplexity learned about you from another website.

Why track Perplexity?

Google Search Console shows Google data only. It cannot show if Perplexity names you or a competitor. Comparing AI search vs organic search visibility often shows a gap: a page that ranks well on Google may never be cited. Tracking tells you which page to fix first.

How to track Perplexity visibility for free

This method works if you want to see mentions in Perplexity or check the AI visibility of your website without paying for software.

Step 1: Find real customer questions

Open the Performance report in Google Search Console. Add a Query filter. Choose “Custom (regex)” and paste:

^(how|what|why|can|does|should|which|best)

This keeps only questions. Add questions from sales calls and enquiry emails. Aim for 12 to 15.

Step 2: Write your prompts and freeze them

Here is the full set for Cedar Row Bookkeeping. Copy the pattern for your own business.

#TypePrompt
1Problem“How do I separate personal and business expenses as a freelancer?”
2Problem“What happens if I haven’t done my bookkeeping for six months?”
3Cost“How much does a bookkeeper cost for a freelancer in Denver?”
4Cost“Monthly bookkeeping cost for an Etsy seller”
5Service“Bookkeeper for Etsy sellers in Denver”
6Service“Do I need a bookkeeper or can I use QuickBooks myself?”
7Comparison“QuickBooks vs Xero for a one-person business”
8Comparison“Local bookkeeper vs online bookkeeping service for a small business”
9Evaluation“What should I ask before hiring a bookkeeper?”
10Evaluation“How do I know if my bookkeeper is doing a good job?”
11Local“Best bookkeepers in Denver for small businesses”
12Local“Bookkeeping services near Capitol Hill, Denver”
13Brand check“Is Cedar Row Bookkeeping any good?”

Prompts 1 to 12 do not include the brand name. Only prompt 13 does. If your name is in the question, Perplexity is more likely to mention you, and your results look better than they are.

Save the exact words. Even one changed word makes it a new prompt.

Step 3: Run each prompt in two lanes

We call this the Three Lanes method. It is our own testing habit, not a Perplexity feature.

  • Lane A: standard search
  • Lane B: Pro Search or a deeper mode, if your account has it
  • Lane C (optional): the same prompt with your city or customer type added

Perplexity’s modes work differently, and names and daily limits change. Check what your account shows. Write the mode next to every result. If you appear in Lane B but not Lane A, your visibility depends on deeper searching.

Thirteen prompts in two lanes is 26 runs. Plan for about an hour the first time.

Step 4: Log every run

Copy this table into a spreadsheet. These rows are examples only.

DatePrompt #LaneBrand mentioned?Domain cited?Target URL cited?Sources cited (type)Next action
11-025ANoNoNo2 competitors, 1 directoryBuild an Etsy page
11-025BYesNoNo1 competitor, 2 directories, 1 RedditCheck directory listing
11-0211AYesYesNoOwn homepage, 2 review sitesStrengthen local page

Step 5: Build a Source Map

Do not only ask “were we cited?” Also ask “who was cited?” Sort every cited link into one type: own site, competitor, directory or review site, forum, software guide, news, government.

Example (invented): across 13 prompts you count 40 cited links. 14 are directories or review sites. 11 are competitors. 6 are forum threads. 5 are software guides. 3 are your own pages. 1 is a government page.

A possible lesson: most citations go to pages you do not own. Listings and reviews may matter as much as your blog. Treat this as an idea to test, not a fact.

Quick tip: Record the type of every cited link. The Source Map shows you where to spend your time.

How to measure Perplexity visibility

Use these formulas. They are tracking rules for this guide, not official Perplexity metrics.

  • Brand mention rate = (prompts that mention your brand ÷ prompts tested) × 100
  • Domain citation rate = (prompts that cite your domain ÷ prompts tested) × 100
  • Target-page citation rate = (prompts that cite one page ÷ prompts tested) × 100
  • Competitor citation rate = (prompts that cite one competitor ÷ prompts tested) × 100

Example (invented): Cedar Row’s 12 brand-free prompts in Lane A.

MeasureCountSumResult
Brand mention rate3 of 123 ÷ 12 × 10025%
Domain citation rate2 of 122 ÷ 12 × 10017%
Etsy page citation rate0 of 120 ÷ 12 × 1000%
Competitor A citation rate7 of 127 ÷ 12 × 10058%

Count each prompt once, even if a domain appears many times.

The 0–3 Prompt Score

Four percentages are hard to follow. Give each prompt one score:

ScoreMeaning
0Not mentioned, not cited
1Brand mentioned, no citation
2Your domain cited
3Your target page cited

Add up the scores. Divide by 3 × the number of prompts. Twelve prompts scoring 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 0, 0, 0 give 12 out of 36, which is 33%. Use this only to compare your own results over time.

How to check Perplexity referral traffic

A citation is not a click. Check traffic on its own. This also helps you analyze traffic from Perplexity over time.

In Google Analytics 4:

  1. Open Traffic acquisition in the acquisition reports.
  2. Set the primary dimension to Session source / medium, or add it as a second dimension. Google’s Traffic acquisition help page lists these dimensions.
  3. Search for sources that contain “perplexity”. Read the real values in your own property. They can vary.
  4. Add Landing page as a second dimension to see which pages get the visits.
  5. For a permanent view, make a custom channel group where session source contains “perplexity”. Menu names change, so look in Admin.

Some visits have no referrer and show as direct. Your Perplexity number may be too low.

Check your server logs

Perplexity lists two crawlers. PerplexityBot is built to surface and link websites in results. Perplexity-User supports user actions in Perplexity. This command shows the pages they requested on a standard server log:

grep -iE "PerplexityBot|Perplexity-User" /var/log/nginx/access.log | awk '{print $7}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn | head -20

The log path and column number depend on your server. On managed hosting, use the log viewer. Seeing the bot means it reached the page. It does not mean you will be cited. Perplexity publishes IP lists on its crawler documentation so you can check a request is real.

Make sure you do not block it. Your robots.txt should not disallow it:

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

Quick tip: Check your firewall too. A rule that blocks “AI bots” in bulk can block PerplexityBot even when robots.txt is fine.

Free vs paid Perplexity visibility tools

Start with the free method. Move to a paid tool when you want more prompts, daily checks or client reports.

Free (manual)Paid tool
CostFree, about an hour per roundPaid, often with a trial
How oftenWhen you do itScheduled, often daily
HistoryOnly what you saveBuilt in
Cited URLs and competitorsBy handUsually automatic
Weak pointSlow, small samplePrompt limits, still a sample

Third-party comparisons in late 2026 report entry plans from about $29 a month (Otterly.AI Lite, reported at 15 prompts including Perplexity) up to about $85–$99 a month for other tools. If these figures are right, a 13-prompt set fits the cheapest plan. Check each vendor’s pricing page, because plans change often.

For citation analysis, check four things: is Perplexity included, can you see the real cited URLs, can you export data, and can you test more than one mode. If you are still building your toolkit, start with these free SEO tools for small businesses.

Why does Perplexity cite competitors instead of my website?

There is no single cause and no guaranteed fix. Check these seven things in order.

  1. Does the page answer fast? Read the first 100 words of the cited competitor page.
  2. Can Perplexity reach it? Check indexing, robots.txt and firewall rules. If a page is indexed but invisible, read why a website is not ranking on Google. Perplexity’s documentation recommends allowing PerplexityBot.
  3. Does it have details? Prices, steps, timelines and examples help.
  4. Is your identity clear? Name, services, location and author should match on your site and profiles.
  5. Do other sites agree with you? Your Source Map shows which directories and forums matter.
  6. Is the competitor page truly better? Compare honestly.
  7. Do you have a page for this exact question? An Etsy question needs an Etsy page, not a general services page.

Citation-gap action table

What you seeWhat to checkPossible next step
Mentioned, no linkIs the mention coming from a directory, not your site?Put the same facts on your own page. Fix listings.
Competitor cited on prompt 5What does their page say in the first 100 words that yours does not?Compare line by line. Close real gaps only.
Homepage cited, not service pageDoes a service page exist and is it linked?Build or improve it. Add internal links.
None of your pages appearDo you have a page that answers this?Create one only if customers need it.
Only Reddit and directories citedAre you listed there and is it accurate?Fix listings. Answer questions helpfully where allowed.
Cited in Lane B, not Lane ADoes the answer only show up with deeper search?Move the main answer higher on the page.

One result is a clue, not proof.

Example: rewrite one answer block

Say prompt 4 (“Monthly bookkeeping cost for an Etsy seller”) cites two competitors but not Cedar Row. The Etsy page opens like this:

Before: “We offer tailored bookkeeping solutions for e-commerce businesses to help you stay organised and compliant.”

That sentence fits any business. A clearer opening gives Perplexity something to use:

After: “Bookkeeping for Etsy sellers in Denver starts at $[your real price] a month and covers [what is included]. We reconcile Etsy payouts, track fees, and send your monthly report by the [day].”

Fill the brackets with true facts only. This is good SEO, AEO and GEO practice in one edit: a direct answer first, clear details, and a clear business identity. It does not guarantee a citation.

Quick fixes that help all three:

  • Put the answer in the first two or three sentences.
  • Write headings as questions customers ask.
  • Use ranges, steps and timelines, not vague words.
  • Show the author and the last-updated date.
  • Use a table when you compare options.
  • Use the same business name and service names everywhere.

A 14-day Perplexity visibility tracking plan

This is a test, not a promise. Fourteen days is short and answers change on their own.

DayDo thisRecord
1Run all prompts in both lanes. Fill the log and Source Map.Mentions, citations, source types, scores
7Run the same prompts. Do not edit pages. What changed without edits
8Use the gap table. Pick 2 or 3 pages.Page, prompt number, reason
9–13Edit those pages: answer first, real details.Exact change and date
14Run the same prompts. Compare Days 1, 7 and 14.Rates, scores, Source Map changes

Quick tip: Do not skip Day 7. It shows how much results move on their own, so you do not mistake normal change for progress.

What are the limits of Perplexity tracking?

  • Answers change between runs, users, modes and days.
  • Thirteen prompts is a sample, not the whole market.
  • Citations can appear and disappear without any change on your site. Site moves can also affect them. See how to protect AI search citations during a website migration.
  • Paid tools run their own prompts, so they also estimate.
  • A tracker shows what happened. It does not show why.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see whether Perplexity mentions my website?

Run your saved prompts. Check the written answer for your brand and the numbered sources for your domain. Write down both, and the mode you used.

Is there a free Perplexity visibility tracker?

Yes. The spreadsheet method in this guide is free. A free trial of a paid tool is not the same as free ongoing tracking.

Can Google Search Console show Perplexity citations?

No. It shows Google Search data only. Use it to find questions to test.

What is the difference between a brand mention and a website citation?

A mention names your business. A citation lists your website as a source. One can happen without the other.

How often should I track Perplexity visibility?

Every two weeks is enough for most small businesses. Daily checks mostly show normal change.

Can Perplexity citations send visitors to my website?

Yes, because cited sources are links. Check your analytics to see how many.

How do I check Perplexity referral traffic?

In GA4, open Traffic acquisition, look for sources that contain “perplexity”, and add landing page as a second dimension.

Can I track keyword rankings in Perplexity?

Not like Google rankings. Each answer is written fresh. Track mentions and citations per prompt instead.

Start with one round

Pick 12 questions from your own Search Console data. Run them in two modes. Sort every cited link by type. In about an hour you will know if your problem is “not cited”, “named but not linked”, or “other sites own the sources”.
